Hungary Trip VI - Szent István

My point of view

No dia seguinte fui até o centro de Budapeste para desenhar a Basílica de Santo Estevão, ou Szent István. Nascido em Esztergom no ano de 975, Szent István é considerado o primeiro rei da Hungria, tendo sido coroado no ano de 1000. Morreu em 1038 e foi canonizado em 1083.
A construção da basílica teve início em 1851, pelas mãos do arquiteto József Hild, e somente foi finalizada em 1905, já sob direção de outro arquiteto.
Assim que cheguei, me posicionei em um dos extremos da esplanada em frente ao edifício. Enquanto realizava o desenho, observava os primeiros movimentos do restaurante em cuja parede eu recostava: a calçada lavada, mesas e cadeiras postas, e assim em diante. Fui simpático com os garçons, que retribuíram me oferecendo uma cadeira. Claro, pedi um café em seguida e acabei almoçando por lá mesmo. Ali comi uma das melhores sobremesas do mundo: a somlói galuska, uma espécie de pavê.

Fiz o desenho seguindo uma abordagem mais pictórica, adicionando camadas de lápis grafite pouco a pouco, a partir do topo do domo. Desenhei por 2 horas ou mais.
Após o almoço iniciei meu percurso de volta à Budakeszi, onde me encontraria com Cecilia para, juntos, darmos uma aula de desenho para seus alunos, em um curso regular de arte que ela oferece para crianças.
Para mim, foi uma experiência nova trabalhar com crianças. E foi uma ótima oportunidade.

Cecília me apresentou e então nos dividimos em dois grupos. Eu fiquei com as crianças mais velhas (entre 9 e 12 anos, imagino), para poder falar em inglês. Fizemos inicialmente um jogo de desenho cego de retratos. Em seguida, explicamos às crianças o conceito de 'espaços negativos', usando folhas de árvores.
Mais tarde fomos à rua desenhar! Eu fiz uma rápida demonstração de como desenhar uma casa de esquina, falando sobre ângulos e formatos, enquanto Cecilia me ajudava e traduzia para elas. Então era a hora das crianças praticarem!
Para nossa satisfação elas se divertiram bastante! E para nossa grata surpresa, muitas delas compreenderam os conceitos e fizeram desenhos ótimos. Algumas capturaram, com uma impressionante dose de acerto, as convergências formadas pelas linhas retrocedentes, sem que tivéssemos mencionados questões técnicas de perspectiva, obviamente. Algumas atingiram ainda resultados pictóricos...Foi incrível.

Mais tarde nos reunimos na casa de Cecília novamente para falarmos sobre os resultados. As crianças estavam super animadas e assim também ficaram os pais que as vinham buscar pouco a pouco.

No dia seguinte fiquei radiante ao saber que algumas delas ficaram desenhando sozinhas por horas em suas casas...
Essa oficina foi um dos melhores momentos que eu tive na viagem.

Good company for a sketch

On the next day I went by my own to Budapest, to sketch the St. Stephen Basilica.
Born in Esztergom in 975, St. Stephen is considered the very first king of Hungary, being crowned in 1000. He died in 1038 and was canonized in 1083.
The basilica construction began in 1851, under the architect József Hild's direction. It was not completed until 1905.
As soon as I arrived I found a spot across the square, against to a restaurant wall. As I sketched I watched the restaurant waking up, from the guys washing the sidewalk to the ones who organized the tables. As they offered me chair, I asked for a latte. The were nice with me, letting me staying the whole time there, and I eventually had lunch in the place.
As for the drawing, I approached the subject painterly, using graded pencils, from top down.
I spent more than 2 hours, sketching it very slowly.
After having the most delicious dessert - a somlói galuska - I returned to Budakeszi, where met Cecilia. She had invited me to join her art class she teaches every Monday, at her own house. It was the first time I taught to children, and it was a great and rich opportunity.
We split the group in half so I stayed with the old ones - from 9 to 12 years old (I suppose), so I could speak in English. First, we did a blind-drawing portraits game. Then we explained the concept of negative spaces, using leaves - they should paint the negative space of them, which they seemed to understand.

After that, we went to the street and I did a quick demonstration of how to draw a house while Cecilia helped me translating to the kids. It was then time to practicing!
For our delight, the kids had a lot of fun. But, what impressed us the most was that some of the kids made really good drawings! Some even got the perspective correctly - in a total intuitive way of course. It was interesting to see them expressing themselves in each particularly way. I was amazed to see even some painterly drawings!
Later on we talked about the results at Cecilia's place. The children were really excited and so were their parents, as they arrive to take them back home.
The next day I was pleased to learn that some of kids spent hours drawing by their own at home...
This workshop was one of the high lights of my time in Hungary.
