Então começou o primeiro workshop, com Francis D. K. Ching (ou Frank Ching para os íntimos) e Pedro Cabral. Nos dirigimos ao Largo do Chiado e ficamos a vontade para desenhar.
Após eu ter feito dois desenhos, vi que os instrutores estavam sozinhos e fui lá mostrar para eles...Falando em um tom muito tranquilo, muito educadamente, Frank Ching fez alguns comentários...ele enfatizou que devemos 'nos colocar' no desenho, ou seja, sugerir um primeiro plano no qual estamos inseridos, como observadores daquela cena. Sugeriu adicionar alguma textura no piso, um hatching aqui e ali para 'soltar' os planos. Um contraste maior em alguns pontos. Enfim, toques sutis de um mestre da arte de desenhar.
Terminado o workshop fomos todos comer juntos ali perto. Acompanhei Frank (agora já sou muito íntimo!) desenhando por alguns instantes. Ele disse que gosta de fazer desenhos pequenos e rápidos, no máximo 30 minutos. Sua caneta desliza no papel com muita facilidade, como é de se imaginar. Conheci também a Melanie Reim e Pete Scully, além de outras pessoas muito simpáticas e talentosas.

The day of the symposium finally arrived... I went to the courtyard of the Faculty of Fine Arts to get my registration kit. At that point I was still kind of shy, perhaps nervous about using my English. Nevertheless, I presented myself to Gabi Campanario who is very friendly and a super hero to all. I was happy to meet him in person. I also introduced myself to Gerard Michel and leafed through some of his sketchbooks. His sketchbooks are filled with drawings, all incredibly beautiful. The sketchbook I had in my hands was started 20 days before, and it was almost finished.
So, it began the first workshop, with Francis D. K. Ching and Pedro Cabral. We went to Largo do Chiado and we were free to draw anything we wanted.

After making two drawings, I saw the instructors alone and went there to show my sketchbook. Speaking quietly, in a politely way, Frank Ching made some comments ... he stressed that we should 'put ourselves’ into the drawing, by suggesting the place where we are, as observers of the scene. He also suggested adding some texture on the floor, a hatch to separate plans, increasing contrast in some areas, etc.
After the workshop we all had lunch together. I watched Frank Ching sketching. He said he likes to make small, quick sketches, within 30 minutes. His pen slides very easily on the paper, as you might wonder. I also met Melanie Reim and Pete Scully, and other very nice and talented people.
